INTERACTIVE SYNTHESIS WITH PHYSICAL COMPUTING working session lead by OVE HOLMQVIST

INTERACTIVE SYNTHESIS WITH PHYSICAL COMPUTING working session lead by OVE HOLMQVIST

Ove Holmqvist (1971) is a multidisciplinary artist, producer and technologist that combines music psychology, bioculture and interaction design to create new, improvised music experiences that are based on real-world phenomena and data sonification.
Using applied biomusicology and physical computing, Holmqvist includes theories of embodied cognition and enactivism to approach music from a biocultural perspective while enabling participatory practices for users of all skill levels and ages. He combines his extensive experience in visual arts with sound through the concept of perception-action coupling, or auditory-motor coactivation, which is evident in his performances that also contain lighting as an integral part. Holmqvist’s project biomusic.cc, incorporated as Holonic Systems, has developed assistive music technologies that can be used to make contextually relevant, biologically and perceptually grounded ubiquitous electronic music experiences. With these tools, he aims to diffuse the roles of producer and listener while contributing to a culture of better, more interactive and inclusive music enjoyment. As an industrial partner of Queen Mary University London’s Centre for Digital Music and their AI+Music doctoral programme, Holmqvist is set to use social musical communication on a large scale. To this end, Holmqvist is currently tutoring a PhD student working with Holonic Systems on Musical Smart Cities. His recent appearances with performances include Musical Instruments Museum, Brussels, 2018, Bonnefooi, Brussels, 2018, Brussels Electronic Marathon, Recy-K, Brussels, 2017, Modular Haze, Club 420, Barcelona, 2017, Grey Cube Festival, Helsinki, 2016, World Conference of Science Journalists, Porthania, 2013 ESO107. www.ove.fi

Sebastian Mullaert (SE) The Swedish artist has a distinct approach to life, as well as music, which is centred around tranquillity, stillness and the convergence of Zen meditation, nature and creativity. Known for his work as one half of Minilogue, Sebastian is also an accomplished solo artist with new material ready to roll. As an artist that is constantly evolving he has taken a bold new direction in his sonic exploration, immersing himself in the neo-classical scene and joining forces with one of the top 10 philharmonic orchestras in the world - Tonhalle Zürich. Throughout the late nineties he experimented with electronic sounds, forming cult duo Minilogue with a friend and releasing with Crosstown Rebels, Traum Schallplatten, Wagon Repair and more, plus two albums via Cocoon – ‘Animals’ (2008) and ‘Blomma’ (2013). In 2014, the duo decided to take a break and invest their time in solo projects and Sebastian has since been hard at work cultivating a collection of new music already snapped up by hugely influential labels such as R&S sub-label Apollo, Drumcode, Hypercolour and Minus. Recognition of his aptitude has led him to perform at institutions and festivals such as Panorama Bar - Berlin, Labyrinth Festival - Japan, Fabric - London, Concrete - Paris, The Block - Tel Aviv and Blackmarket - NYC. In 2018 Sebastian launched his project Circle of Live; a brand new event series concept and a record label, honouring the value of improvisational spontaneity. The project brings together elite artists, known for their live performances in the dance music world, and gives them an opportunity to take part in free-flowing collaborative jam sessions in clubs around the world. www.circleof.live

PROCESSING OF SOUND AND MUSIC IN THE BRAIN public talk by PROF. DR. URSULA KOCH

PROCESSING OF SOUND AND MUSIC IN THE BRAIN public talk by PROF. DR. URSULA KOCH

Sun Woo has been working as a spiritual guide for the last 30 years. He’s trained in South Korean temples for many years. His long practical experience, combined with his Buddhist training led to his extraordinary healing power. He has strong level of empathy, and a loving personality. His guidance made life-changing transfers in his student’s lives. His teachings are not only limited to Zen but also open to all beliefs and cultures. Ji Woo left her successful business career in London to help people in their journey of life. She has a gentle approachable attitude and genuine desire to help, and has enabled many people to change their lives for the better. She has created many personal development programmes. They use sound as the main element in their zen practices. They are currently living in Ida Mountains in West Turkey.

Prof. Dr. Koch’s research group is interested in how our brain „learns“ to understand our acoustic environment. They investigate which genetic and external factors contribute to the proper development of brain circuits that analyze sound patterns. To better understand these developmental processes they investigate neural circuits (ion channels, synapses, anatomical structures) in the auditory brainstem and midbrain using a combination of electrophysiology in acute brain slices and anatomical/ immunohistochemical methods. www.bit.ly/DrKochGroup

EVEN A DEEPER LISTENING experience sessions by HANS ROSENSTRÖM

EVEN A DEEPER LISTENING experience sessions by
HANS ROSENSTRÖM

Hans Rosenström (b. 1978, Lohja, Finland). Rosenström’s practice centers around installations that deal with the viewers psychological and physical relationship within a specific moment and place. The works are often carefully produced in relation to the sites where they are experienced in. When creating these situations he uses a wide variety of media and material; from the ephemeral yet tactile qualities of sound to architectural interventions. The presence of the viewer is integral in the work which often remains incomplete until it has been activated. Rosenström has participated in multiple group exhibitions including: Anatomy of Political Melancholy, Schwarz Foundation, Athens Conservatory, Greece (2019), Everything Was Forever, Until It Was No More, 1st Riga International Biennial of Contemporary Art, Riga (2018), The Garden – End of Times, Beginning of Time, Aros Triennial, Århus, Denmark (2017), The Vanishing Point of History, L’Été Photographique de Lectoure, France (2015), Theater of The Mind, Cranbrook Art Museum, Bloomfield Hills, USA (2014) and Nouvelles Vagues: The Black Moon, Palais de Tokyo, Paris, France (2014).
