Ten residents will be selected to join the upcoming FIELD KITCHEN ACADEMY between 15 August - 8 September 2020. Curated by Ece Pazarbasi, the second edition of the Field Kitchen Academy will be realised under the title of The Curious Loop. During 3,5 weeks, the Field Kitchen Academy will host public events (the Field), closed working sessions (the Kitchen) and conceptual cooking actions in Wüsten-Buchholz, Perleberg; 1,5 hrs away from Berlin.

With three modules, the residents will have the opportunity of pursuing processes of experimentation, discussion, trial and error, progression of knowledge, know-how and creativity together with Sebastian Mullaert (aka Minilogue), Bill Fontana, Hans Peter Kuhn, Ove Holmqvist, Hans Rosenström, Prof. Ursula Koch and Zen masters Sun Wo & Ji Woo during the first 3 weeks. The last half week will be the ‘simmering’ period where the residents are expected to do NOTHING.


Applications can be made for Module #1 plus Module #2 (Module #3) for the entire period (960 Euros) or only for Module #1 for 1 week (490 Euros) or only for Module #2 for approximately 3 weeks (760 Euros). The participation fee covers accommodation for the entire period, 3 plant based meals (breakfast, lunch, dinners, plus tea time snacks) every day, the program fee for the entire working sessions and participation in the public program.

The applications are open not only to those with an artistic background, but to all creative minds who have an interest in sound, loop, contemporary and interdisciplinary creative practices. All are encouraged to apply. The tentative application deadline is 22 June 2020; successful candidates will be contacted by 6 July 2020.

SCHOLARSHIP:

The Field Kitchen Academy offers 1 (one) scholarship to a successful applicant selected by the Jury. The scholarship covers the entire residency fee for Module #3 (between 15 August - 8 September), including the expenses for accommodation, meals and attendance to public events. Travel and subsistence costs are not included in the scholarship. Please indicate in the application form if you wish to apply for the grant. You will be notified of the result in due course.

*Please note that each participant is expected to commit to the program by staying the entire period and attending all events.


SELECTION PROCESS:

The selection process will be pursued by a jury composed of Peter Cusack, Ali M. Demirel, Juliana Hodkinson, together with Mario Asef and Ece Pazarbasi:

Peter Cusack is a field recordist and sound artist/musician with a long interest in the sonic environment. He is a member of CRiSAP (Creative Research into Sound Art Practice) at the University of the Arts, London and is based in London and Berlin. In 1998 he initiated the “Favourite Sounds Project” to discover how people interact with the soundscapes of the places where they live, carried out initially in London and subsequently in Beijing, Birmingham, Manchester, Prague, Hull and Berlin. The project ‘Sounds from Dangerous Places’ (described as sonic journalism) investigates the soundscapes of sites of major environmental damage such as the Caspian oil fields and the Chernobyl exclusion zone, the restoration of the Aral Sea, Kazakhstan, and logging in the Bialowieza Forest, Poland. He produced 'Vermilion Sounds' - the environmental sound program - for ResonanceFM Radio, London and was DAAD artist-in-residence in Berlin during 2011/12, where he instigated ‘Berlin Sonic Places’ a wide-ranging collaborative project on the theme of urban soundscapes and city development. Musically he plays guitar with field recordings and photographs in performance. He had played numerous concerts worldwide and collaborated with many international improvising musicians, including Clive Bell, Nic Collins, Alterations (David Toop, Steve Beresford, Terry Day, Peter Cusack) and Viv Corringham. Born in 1972, Turkey, Ali M. Demirel is a visual artist with educational background in Architecture and Nuclear Engineering. Producing in various formats, he focuses on minimal imagery and structural compositions. His concepts are often driven from science, nature and architecture. Demirel also designs and performs audio visual live shows in collaboration with Richie Hawtin aka Plastikman. Reflecting his background in physics and architecture, he has established a unique visual style with minimal electronic music. Lives and works in Berlin since 2008. www.ali-m.de

Juliana Hodkinson works as composer and sound artist, and critical explorer at large. She received her PhD in musicology from the University of Copenhagen with a thesis on silence in music and sound art, and presently teaches composition at the Royal Academy of Music in Aarhus, Denmark. She works with instruments, electronics and amplified objects such as matches, threads and water. Recent works include All Around, an orchestral work with distributed musicians and surround-sound field recordings, and the word-score Something in capitals, for voices and instruments. Her work has been commissioned by the BBC, Westdeutscher Rundfunk, the Darmstädter Ferienkurse, Chamber Made Opera and Phønix16, amongst others. Mario Asef studied architecture and art in Argentina, Germany, and England. His work has been exhibited worldwide, most recently at Daegu Photo Biennale 2018 (South Korea), Unarte (Puebla, Mexico), Quartier 21 Museumsquartier (Vienna), Wildpalms (Düsseldorf), Junge Kunst e.V. (Wolfsburg, Germany), Kasa Galeri (Istanbul), The Drawing Hub (Berlin). Recent museum exhibitions include Hamburger Kunsthalle, Villa Merkel, Kunstlerhaus Bregenz (Austria), and the Akademie der Künste Berlin. His videos, photographs, sound installations, and interventions in public space deal with architectonic as well as sociopolitical questions and confront issues related to their spatial representability.

Ece Pazarbasi is the director and the curator of the Field Kitchen Academy. She has co-curated BANK BLANK, the main exhibition of 48 Std. Neukölln in 2018. In 2017, she has curated “Memory Plates” parallel programme at Hamburger Bahnhof with Festival Future Nows. In 2016, she has received Kulturstiftung des Bundes’ International Curators Fellowship and curated the “Cabinet of the Unknown” exhibition at Werkbundarchiv - Museum der Dinge (2017). Her other projects include “Muscle Memory” exhibition at Kunstraum Kreuzberg/ Bethanien (2017); Istanbul Coordinator for New Museum NY: Ideas City (2012). Also she co-curated “12/12” and “Turkish Art Nice and Simple” exhibitions at Tanas Berlin (2011-2012) together with René Block.


- All events at the Field Kitchen Academy and the Curious Loop Public Programme will be taking place in accordance to the regulations of the German state authorities.

- All public events will be taking place outdoors with a special seating arrangement according to the state social distancing norms.

- Prior to the project, all accepted participants of the Field Kitchen Academy will have to submit a health report provided from their local health organizations.

- Within the spacious facility areas of the Gutshaus Wüsten-Buchholz, a number of single rooms are available on first come first served basis.

CONDITIONS

*The participation fee covers shared room for two people for the entire period, 3 plant based meals (breakfast, lunch, dinners and tea time snacks) and the program fee for the entire working sessions and participation in the public program.

*The funds raised from this program will go directly towards the funding of Field Kitchen Academy’s educational residency programming.

** A limited number of single rooms are available with a supplement of 100 eur per week, on a first come basis.

* The organizer reserves the right to make changes to the Field Kitchen Academy program. If necessary, changes may be made to its content, method and organization before or during the event, insofar as these changes do not substantially diminish the described benefits of the program for the participant.


FAQ

  • I am an artist who is not specialized on sound, may I still apply? Definitely yes, as we love interdisciplinary interactions, artists and creative minds from different fields (visual artists, performers, dancers, DJs, architects, chefs, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.

  • Do you cover travel costs? Travel costs are not covered, yet we cover three meals and tea breaks, accommodation and the fees of the sessions.

  • Is Field Kitchen Academy only open to artists? The Field Kitchen Academy is open to everyone from every walks of life. The only priority is to have an interest in the topics of sound.

  • Do I have to have knowledge in sound prior to the residency? No, yet it is advisable to get yourself acquainted with the computer programs that we will use during the sessions.

  • Can we apply as a team? We only accept individual applications, yet you can apply separately.

  • If I come by train, how can I reach Gutshaus Wüsten-Buchholz? There will be shuttle buses arranged for you on certain hours.

  • Do I have to be at the residency during the entire time? Definitely yes!

  • If I get selected, when do I have to make the payment by? The payments will have to be made by the beginning of August 2020.

  • Do I have to bring anything with me to the residency? Your laptops. Requirements for each working session is indicated in the session description.

  • When exactly does the Module #1/#3 start? Module #1/#3 starts on August 15th 2020.

  • Are the sessions practice or theory based? They involve both, yet focus is more on practice based processes.

  • Can one apply to come for just for couple of days? As the content of the programme is organized in a way each session builds on the previous week, it is not possible to attend only for couple of days. Plus, the main idea of the Field Kitchen Academy is to build communities, and that is why we love to spend time together in longer periods ;)
