Ten residents will be selected to join the upcoming FIELD KITCHEN ACADEMY between 31 July - 24 August September 2022. Curated by Ece Pazarbasi, the third edition of the Field Kitchen Academy will be realised under the title of Voice as Object, Object (H)as Voice. During 3,5 weeks, the Field Kitchen Academy will host public events (the Field), closed working sessions (the Kitchen) and conceptual cooking actions in Wüsten-Buchholz, Perleberg; app. 1,5 hrs away from Berlin.
With three modules, the residents will have the opportunity of pursuing processes of experimentation, discussion, trial and error, progression of knowledge, know-how and creativity together with Sam Auinger, Graham Harman, Saadet Türköz, Hans Rosenström, Martin Riches, Zeynep Bulut, Brandon LaBelle, Ji Woo & Sun Woo (Zen Masters) and guest ventriloquist during the first 3 weeks. The last half week will be the ‘simmering’ period where the residents are expected to do NOTHING.
Applications can be made for Module #3 (Module #1 plus Module #2) for the entire period (1200 eur) or only for Module #1 (620 eur) for 1 week or only for Module #2 (920 eur) for approximately 3 weeks. The participation fee covers accommodation for the entire period, 3 plant based meals (breakfast, lunch, dinners, plus tea time snacks) every day, the program fee for the entire working sessions, the conceptual dinners in the weekends, site and natural reserves visits and participation in the public program.
The applications are open not only to those with an artistic background, but to all creative minds who have an interest in sound, loop, contemporary and interdisciplinary creative practices. All are encouraged to apply. The tentative application deadline is 30 April 2022; successful candidates will be contacted by the first week of May 2022.

SCHOLARSHIPS:
The Field Kitchen Academy offers 3 scholarships. The scholarship holders will be selected by the Jury:
The Field Kitchen Academy offers 1 (one) scholarship to a successful applicant selected by the Jury. The scholarship covers the entire residency fee for Module #3 (between 31 July - 24 August), including the expenses for accommodation, meals and attendance to public events. Travel and subsistence costs are not included in the scholarship. The applicant can be from any nationality and any background.
With the kind support of Goethe-Institut, The Field Kitchen Academy offers scholarships to 2 (two) successful applicants from DAC countries. This scholarship covers the entire residency fee for Module #3 (between 31 July - 24 August), including the expenses for flights, health, liability and accident insurance for the two participants for their time in Germany, accommodation, meals and attendance to public events.
Please indicate in the application form if you wish to apply for the grant. You will be notified of the result in due course.
*Please note that each participant is expected to commit to the program by staying the entire period and attending all events.
SELECTION PROCESS:
The selection process will be pursued by a jury composed of Ursula Block, Arnold Dreyblatt, Essi Kalima, together with Mario Asef and Ece Pazarbasi:
Ursula Block started Galerie René Block, Berlin together with Rene Block between 1970-9. In 1981 she has founded Gelbe Musik, Berliner record store and gallery for visual & sound artists on records, as well as all kind of contemporary and experimental music. The idea to found Gelbe Musik (Yellow music) came to Ursula Block while establishing a collection of music recordings in the framework of the exhibition Für Augen und Ohren (For eyes and ears) at Akademie der Künste (Berlin, 1980). Within the context of Gelbe Musik she ahs organised numerous exhibitions with an emphasis on Sound Art: John Cage, Dieter Schnebel, Gerhard Rühm, Claus Böhmler, Die Tödliche Doris, Earle Brown, Henning Christiansen, Nam June Paik, Christian Marclay, Milan Knizak and many other artists. In 1983, she has co-founded Freunde Guter Musik (Friends of Good Music), an organisation that presented new music and music in new forms in various venues throughout Berlin. In 1989, she has published Publication of the Anthology Broken Music: Artists‘ Recordworks (with Michael Glasmeier). Since the closure of Gelbe Musik in 2014, Block has been working on the Broken Music Archive.
Arnold Dreyblatt (b. New York City, 1953) is an American media artist and composer. He has been based in Berlin, Germany since 1984. Dreyblatt is a member of the Akademie der Künste in Berlin and is the Vice-Director of the Visual Arts Section. He is currently Professor of Media Art at the Muthesius Academy of Art and Design (Muthesius Kunsthochschule) in Kiel, Germany. Arnold Dreyblatt’s extensive oeuvre includes works for the Women’s Concentration Camp Memorial Ravensbrück (Calendarium and Inmates I & II, 2013/14), the Berlin-Hohenschönhausen Memorial (Das Dossier, 2013), the German Federal Ministry of Agriculture (Inschriften/Inscriptions, 2010), the Jewish Museum Berlin (Unausgesprochen/Unsaid, 2008), and the Center for Holocaust and Minorities, Olso (Innocent Questions, 2006). He has also received many commissions and awards including the visual arts prize of the Berlin Academy of Arts (2000) and the artist’s prize of the Foundation for Contemporary Performance Arts in New York (1999). www.dreyblatt.net
Essi Kalima is a Finnish cultural manager, who has worked since 2000 in the field of culture and science in Germany. She studied communication studies at the University of Helsinki and at the University of Amsterdam. She has been working a.o. as a head of culture programme at the Finnish Institute in Germany and as a culture officer at the Embassy of Finland in Berlin. At the moment she is taking a deeper look into the written cultural memory and working as a scientific employee at the Berlin State Library of the Prussian Cultural Heritage Foundation. Contemporary art as well as music, sound and voice play a very special role for her. She is part of the Berlin-based A-cappella Ensemble "Fugatonale", teaches piano and writes song lyrics for several musicians. Building transcultural bridges for contemporary artists is a lifelong, fulfilling task for her.
Mario Asef studied architecture and art in Argentina, Germany, and England. His work has been exhibited worldwide, most recently at Daegu Photo Biennale 2018 (South Korea), Unarte (Puebla, Mexico), Quartier 21 Museumsquartier (Vienna), Wildpalms (Düsseldorf), Junge Kunst e.V. (Wolfsburg, Germany), Kasa Galeri (Istanbul), The Drawing Hub (Berlin). Recent museum exhibitions include Hamburger Kunsthalle, Villa Merkel, Kunstlerhaus Bregenz (Austria), and the Akademie der Künste Berlin. His videos, photographs, sound installations, and interventions in public space deal with architectonic as well as sociopolitical questions and confront issues related to their spatial representability. Ece Pazarbasi is the founding director and the curator of the Field Kitchen Academy. Her curatorial experiences include “The Things We Are Made Of,” a series of 4 exhibitions at WAM Turku City Art Museum, Finland (2019-2020); “Seedlings with Siblings” sound art events series at Frontviews (2021); “Cabinet of the Unknown” exhibition Werkbundarchiv - Museum der Dinge (2017); “Bank Blank” 20th year anniversary main exhibition of 48 hrs Neukölln (2018); “Memory Plates” within the frame of Festival of Future Nows at Hamburger Bahnhof (2017); “Muscle Memory” Kunstraum Bethanien/ Kreuzberg (2017); “12/12” and “Turkish Art Nice and Simple” exhibitions at Tanas Berlin (2011-2012) together with René Block. She was the assistant curator of the 52nd Venice Biennial Turkish Pavilion (2007). Her other professional work includes being the project coordinator for New Museum - New York for Ideas City: Istanbul (2012) and Consultant and Program Specialist of Visual Arts for Turkey at the Strategic Planning and Development Department for Abu Dhabi Authority for Culture and Heritage, UAE (2009-2010). CONDITIONS
*The participation fee covers shared room for two people for the entire period, 3 plant based meals (breakfast, lunch, dinners and tea time snacks) and the program fee for the entire working sessions and participation in the public program.
*Arrival onsite on the first session day. Departure from site on the last session day.
*The applications are open not only to those with an artistic background, but to all creative minds who have an interest in sound, silence, contemporary and interdisciplinary creative practices. All are encouraged to apply.
*The funds raised from this program will go directly towards the funding of Field Kitchen Academy’s educational residency programming.
** A limited number of single rooms are available with a supplement of 100 eur per week, on a first come basis.
- All events at the Field Kitchen Academy and the Curious Loop Public Programme will be taking place in accordance to the regulations of the German state authorities.
- If necessary, all public events will be taking place outdoors with a special seating arrangement according to the state social distancing norms.
- Prior to the project, all accepted participants of the Field Kitchen Academy might have to submit a health, vaccine report or PCR test.
- Within the spacious facility areas of the Gutshaus Wüsten-Buchholz, a number of single rooms are available on first come first served basis.
FAQ
I am an artist who is not specialized on sound, may I still apply? Definitely YES, as we love interdisciplinary interactions, artists and creative minds from different fields (visual artists, performers, dancers, DJs, architects, chefs, etc.) are strongly encouraged to apply.
Do you cover travel costs? Travel costs are not covered, yet we cover three meals and tea breaks, accommodation, conceptual dinners in the weekends, site and natural reserves visits and participation in the public program and the fees of the sessions.
Is Field Kitchen Academy only open to artists? The Field Kitchen Academy is open to everyone from every walks of life. The only priority is to have an interest in the topics of sound.
Do I have to have knowledge in sound prior to the residency? No, yet it is advisable to get yourself acquainted with the computer programs that we will use during the sessions.
Can we apply as a team? We only accept individual applications, yet you can apply separately.
If I come by train, how can I reach Gutshaus Wüsten-Buchholz? There will be shuttle buses arranged for you on certain hours.
Do I have to be at the residency during the entire time? Definitely yes!
If I get selected, when do I have to make the payment by? The payments will have to be made by the beginning of July 2022.
Do I have to bring anything with me to the residency? Your laptops. Requirements for each working session is indicated in the session description.
When exactly does the Module #1/#3 start? Module #1/#3 starts on July 31st 2022.
Are the sessions practice or theory based? They involve both, yet focus is more on practice based processes.
Can one apply to come for just for couple of days? As the content of the programme is organized in a way each session builds on the previous week, it is not possible to attend only for couple of days. Plus, the main idea of the Field Kitchen Academy is to build communities, and that is why we love to spend time together in longer periods ;)
